About the Author

John E. McMurry received his B.A. from Harvard University and his Ph.D. at Columbia University. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and an Alfred P. He has received several awards, which include the National Institutes of Health Career Development Award, the Alexander von Humboldt Senior Scientist Award, and the Max Planck Research Award. About the Author

William H. Brown is emeritus professor of chemistry at Beloit College, where he was twice named Teacher of the Year. His teaching responsibilities include organic chemistry, advanced organic chemistry, and, more recently, special topics in pharmacology and drug synthesis. He received his Ph.D. from Columbia University under the direction of Gilbert Stork and did postdoctoral work at California Institute of Technology and the University of Arizona.

Brent L. Iverson received his Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology. He is a University Distinguished Teaching Professor and the Dean of the School of Undergraduate Studies at University of Texas at Austin, as well as a respected researcher. His research spans the interface of organic chemistry and molecular biology. His group has developed several patented technologies, including an FDA-approved treatment for late-stage anthrax.

Eric Anslyn received his Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology and is the Norman Hackerman Professor of Chemistry and a University Distinguished Teaching Professor at The University of Texas at Austin. Anslyn’s research focuses on the physicals and bioorganic chemistry of synthetic and natural receptors and catalysts.

Christopher S. Foote was a professor of chemistry at the University of California, Los Angeles. His scholarly credits included Sloan Fellow; Guggenheim Fellow; ACS Baekland Award; ACS Cope Scholar; Southern California Section ACS Tolman Medal; President, American Society for Photobiology; and Senior Editor, Accounts of Chemical Research.

About the Author

Nivaldo Tro received his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Stanford University. He completed his postdoctoral research at the University of California at Berkeley. In 1990, Dr. Tro became a faculty member at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California. During his time at Westmont, he has been awarded grants from the American Chemical Society, Research Corporation, and the National Science Foundation. Dr. Tro has received Westmont’s outstanding teacher of the year award three times. About the Author

After graduating from the Girls’ Latin School in Boston, Paula Bruice earned an A.B. from Mount Holyoke College and a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Virginia. She then received an NIH postdoctoral fellowship for study in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Virginia Medical School and held a postdoctoral appointment in the Department of Pharmacology at Yale Medical School. Paula has been a member of the faculty at the University of California, Santa Barbara since 1972, where she has received the Associated Students Teacher of the Year Award, the Academic Senate Distinguished Teaching Award, two Mortar Board Professor of the Year Awards, and the UCSB Alumni Association Teaching Award.

Karen Timberlake is a professor emeritus at Los Angeles Valley College and is a well-known and successful author. About the Author

L.G. “Skip” Wade—After receiving his B.A. from Rice in 1969, Wade went on to Harvard University, where he did research with Professor James D. White. While at Harvard, he served as the Head Teaching Fellow for the organic laboratories and was strongly influenced by the teaching methods of two master educators, Professors Leonard K. Nash and Frank H. Westheimer. After completing his Ph.D. at Harvard in 1974, Dr. Wade joined the chemistry faculty at Colorado State University. Over the course of fifteen years at Colorado State, Dr. Wade taught organic chemistry to thousands of students working toward careers in all areas of biology, chemistry, human medicine, veterinary medicine, and environmental studies. He also authored research papers in organic synthesis and in chemical education, as well as eleven books reviewing current research in organic synthesis. Since 1989, Dr. Wade has been a chemistry professor at Whitman College, where he teaches organic chemistry and pursues interests in organic synthesis and forensic chemistry. Dr. Wade received the A.E. Lange Award for Distinguished Science Teaching at Whitman in 1993.

Jan Simek was born to humble coal-mining parents who taught him to appreciate the importance of carbon at a very early age. At age 14, he was inspired to pursue a career teaching chemistry by his high school chemistry teacher, Joe Plaskas. Under the guidance of Professor Kurt Kaufman at Kalamazoo College, Dr. Simek began lab work in synthesis of natural products that turned into research in hop extracts for the Kalamazoo Spice Extraction Company. After receiving a master’s degree from Stanford University, Dr. Simek worked in the pharmaceutical industry, synthesizing compounds designed to control diabetes and atherosclerosis, and assisted in the isolation of anti-cancer antibiotics from natural sources. Returning to Stanford University, Dr. Simek completed his Ph.D. with the legendary Professor Carl Djerassi, who developed the first synthesis of steroidal oral contraceptives.

Dr. Simek’s 35-year teaching career was spent primarily at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, where he received the university’s Distinguished Teaching Award. Other teaching experiences include Albion College, the University of Colorado at Boulder, Kalamazoo College, and the University of California at Berkeley. In addition to his pharmaceutical research, he has industrial experience investigating dyes, surfactants, and liquid crystals, and he continues to consult for the biotechnology industry.

Although his outside interests include free climbing in Yosemite, performing in a reggae band, and parasailing over the Pacific, as close as he gets to any of those is tending his backyard garden with his wife Judy.

About the Author
Martin S. Silberberg received his B.S. in chemistry from the City University of New York in 1966 and his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Oklahoma, in 1971.  He then accepted a research position at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where he studied the chemical nature of neurotransmission and Parkinson’s disease.  In 1977, Dr. Silberberg joined the faculty of Simon’s Rock College of Bard (Massachusetts), a liberal arts college known for its excellence in teaching small classes of highly motivated students.  As Head of the Natural Sciences Major and Director of Premedical Studies, he taught courses in general chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, and nonmajors chemistry.  The close student contact afforded him insights into how students learn chemistry, where they have difficulties, and what strategies can help them succeed.  In 1983, Dr. Silberberg decided to apply these insights in a broader context and established a text writing and editing company.  Before writing his own text, he worked on chemistry, biochemistry, and physics texts for several major college publishers.  He resides with his wife and child in Massachusetts.  For relaxation, he cooks, sings, and walks in the woods.

Patricia Amateis graduated with a B.S. in Chemistry Education from Concord University in West Virginia and a PhD in Analytical Chemistry from Virginia Tech. She has been on the faculty of the Chemistry Department at Virginia Tech for 28 years, teaching General Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry. For the past 13 years, she has served as Director of General Chemistry, responsible for the oversight of both the lecture and lab portions of the large General Chemistry program. She has taught thousands of students during her career and has been awarded the University Sporn Award for Introductory Teaching, the Alumni Teaching Award, and the William E. Wine Award for a history of university teaching excellence. She and her husband live in Blacksburg, Virginia and are the parents of three adult children. About the Author

KAREN TIMBERLAKE is Professor Emerita of chemistry at Los Angeles Valley College, where she taught chemistry for allied health and preparatory chemistry for 36 years. She received her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Washington and her master’s degree in biochemistry from the University of California at Los Angeles. Professor Timberlake has been writing chemistry textbooks for 37 years. During that time, her name has become associated with the strategic use of pedagogical tools that promote student success in chemistry and the application of chemistry to real-life situations. More than one million students have learned chemistry using texts, laboratory manuals, and study guides written by Karen Timberlake. In addition General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry, Structures of Life, Fifth Edition, she is also the author of the Twelfth Edition of Chemistry: Introduction to General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry with the accompanying Study Guide and Selected SolutionsManual, and Basic Chemistry, Fourth Edition, with the accompanying Study Guide and Selected Solutions Manual, Laboratory Manual, and Essentials Laboratory Manual.

Professor Timberlake belongs to numerous scientific and educational organizations including the American Chemical Society 1ACS2 and the National Science Teachers Association 1NSTA2. In 1987, she was the Western Regional Winner of Excellence in College Chemistry Teaching Award given by the Chemical Manufacturers Association. In 2004, she received the McGuffey Award in Physical Sciences from the Textbook Authors Association for her textbook Chemistry: An Introduction to General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry, eighth edition, which has demonstrated excellence over time. In 2006, she received the “Texty” Textbook Excellence Award from the Textbook Authors Association for the first edition of Basic Chemistry. She has participated in education grants for science teaching including the Los Angeles Collaborative for Teaching Excellence 1LACTE2 and a Title III grant at her college. She speaks at conferences and educational meetings on the use of student-centered teaching methods in chemistry to promote the learning success of students. When Professor Timberlake is not writing textbooks, she and her husband relax by playing tennis, taking ballroom dance lessons, traveling, trying new restaurants, cooking, and taking care of their grandchildren, Daniel and Emily.
